The Drought
Down by the river when the water’s low
When the rocks are shining and the secrets show
When the sun beats down on the things we hide
I walk back down to the river side
Her father owned the mill downtown
Where I’d sweat everyday till the sun went down
I bought that ring with my very last dime
And we walked by the river when the water was high
Hiding in the sand
I wish I couldn’t remember
I wish we never had
When the rain stopped
When the fields went dry
When the mill closed
And the money got tight
When it wasn’t easy anymore
She went down to the river shore
I went down to the river with the water near gone
I saw a gold ring shining in the setting sun
I picked up the thing that she had tossed
And threw it back in the river cause the love was lost
Hiding in the sand
I wish I couldn’t remember
I wish we never had
Finally I understand
Why she had to surrender
Why I couldn’t have
When the rain stopped
When the fields went dry
When the mill closed
And the money got tight
When it wasn’t easy anymore
She went down to the river shore
Down by the river when the water’s low
When the rocks are shining and the secrets show
When the sun beats down on the things we hide
I walk back down to the river side
Alone
